When a Russian ballet dancer is severely injured her uncle recruits her to become a covert agent who specializes in seduction, and is tasked with discovering a CIA agent's source within the Russian government.
And the pacing is excruciatingly slow, taking a long time to get to the plot. Also, the tone is rather seedy with its focus on sexual manipulation and graphic sex scenes.
Still, there are a couple of interesting and clever plot twists, and some intense and suspenseful moments. An ugly film that meanders endlessly, Red Sparrow is extremely disappointing.

Lawrence commits fully to the role, you can see she is invested with the intensity she brings to the role and it is not here that fails the film.
Francis Lawrence has a mixed bag of films and I have this right in the Constantine bag of quality. The core storyline potential is there, but the substance is not there.
I'm eager to read the book as the plot of the film is a little scarce, nearly to the point of non existent. The characters are a key example of what is wrong with modern Hollywood storytelling, they are just too thin.
The film has a very long running time and it is mainly focused on moving from A to C without explaining B, much of this time should have been spent at the school for the Sparrows.
This could of been one of the better spy films had the film been explored, with more character focus which might have meant a longer running time.

What We Do in the Shadows. There are very good performances from Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling as well as Ciaran Hinds, but what the film lacks is any tension and for a spy thriller the plot doesn't hang together to well.
As a viewer you lack empathy with the lead character which gives you no investment in the characters or story which leaves you with a rather detached uninvolving film.
A few changes from the book, unsurprisingly. What works on the page doesn't necessarily work on the screen. One change I like is the dropping of Dominika's synaesthesia, and as I'm nearing the end of the second novel in the trilogy, I get the distinct impression that the author rather wishes he hadn't introduced it in the first place.
Locations have changed as well; the heart of the novel takes place in Helsinki, whereas the film shifts it to Budapest. A few characters have been dispensed with, but again it's a film, not a novel, and as the novel introduces a lot of characters, some with multisyllabic Russian names, and frequently delights in acronyms to identify or refer to them this, too, is a positive change.
I like the pacing, the casting, settings and design, and I feel it's a film that continues a fine tradion of espionage thrillers stretching back some 60 years.
I'm enjoying seeing characters I've recently become acquainted with on the page being depicted on the screen. Ce n'est pas un film d'espionnage style James Bond ou Mission Impossible.

Translate review to English. Lawrence plays a successful Russian ballerina who injures her leg at the start of the film. Unable to work and support her ill mother, she is approached by her uncle who's a member of some clandestine Russian secret service.
Having no other choice, Lawrence accepts his offer and joins the 'red sparrow' training program where she learns to use sex as a weapon and seduce her targets in order to get information.
After a very brief period of training, she is enrolled in a mission to make contact with an American CIA agent as the Russian secret service suspect that he is in contact with a mole within their ranks and they want to know who it is.
Thus, she makes contact with him in Budapest and he offers to give her and her mother freedom in the US if she starts to work for the CIA.
The film then goes back and forth with the director desperately trying to get the viewers attention by wondering will she defect or not.
This idea ultimately does not work as the film becomes confused and even more unbelievable than it already was what with all the dodgy Russian accents.
Also, Lawrence does get naked but the viewer doesn't get to see anything at all. One person found this helpful. Wow what an intriguing film, full of twists and turn also sex, nudity, violence and torture.
